Graph Databases after 15 years - where are they headed?

  • Linked Data Benchmark Council (LDBC)
  • Join Graph DBs, for people who don’t like to JOIN
  • Overfetching is when you grab too much, and filter on the client
  • Underfetching is the opposite - but leads to the N+1 Query problem
  • The root cause is the impedance mismatch of relational and object models
  • 3 categories of Graph Databases
    • “MongoDB”-like (?) solve repeated joins to avoid N+1 query problem
      • OrientDB (2010), acquired by SAP, then abandoned; forked & lives on as ArcadeDB & YouTrackDB
      • Microsoft Cosmos DB (2017), with Gremlin as Query Language (QL), MongoDB API

Developing Custom UIs to Explore Graph Databases using Sigma.js

DevPod

https://devpod.sh had a booth, and a chat with them VS https://www.gitpod.io (they touted their devcontainer.json https://containers.dev standard support; although it seems that GitPod does also support it). I tried both:

I’ve also explored just directly using JetBrains Gateway on a GCP GCE VM (which allows to choose the IntelliJ version), but I got stuck with SSH not working on Gateway (from a Chromebox). But even if that was fixed, manually need to create, start and remember to shutdown the VM, and manually dealing with ephemeral chaging IPs on VM restarts, as required by this approach, is more cumbersome than DevPod, which handles of this.

Alternatively, one could use Google Cloud Workstations, but that does not support Dev Containers, so one would need to maintain custom workspace set-up scripts (and ituses an older fixed IJ which I couldn’t upgrade).

GitHub Codespaces is the simplest, of course; but does not support IntelliJ, anymore.

NLnet

I’ve listened in to a BoF of NLnet, and was impressed by the energy there.

Nostr

I’ve spent some time at the Nostr booth to better understand what they’re up to, and from what I’ve learned so far, quite like what I’ve heard!

I’m wondering if there’s something to be done with a generic RDF Nostr kind, and how this may relate to Solid. Could Nostr relays be Solid Pods?!

The simplest way to get started being on Nostr seems to be to install Amethyst (or try another Nostr client).
